This summer allowed for picnics in the park, strolls down the street, and fun in the sun with your little one. Most Moms build their days around their newest arrival’s social agenda. While this is rewarding and allows families to build a sense of community in the city, share best practices and discuss common concerns, it is also important for Moms (and of course Dads!) to have some time to decompress and “let loose.”
While naturally parents’ version of “going out on the town” may have changed drastically over the months, taking time to mingle with other Mommies enables you to recharge your battery and feel like a woman again, and not just the person who cooks, cleans, works and cares for your baby.
So put down the diaper bag, wash off the remnants of your little one’s last meal and meet some other moms during a relaxing night of socializing and shopping.
Boston Mom, and Independent Stylist, Marybeth Nelson, recently joined the Stella & Dot team and has found it to be a refreshing experience.
“Serving as an independent stylist has offered the opportunity to do something creative, and fun, all while earning some extra income and thereby offering me more free time with my daughter,” says Marybeth. “Most of the trunk shows are in the evening, so the time away is often while she is asleep and even gives me an enjoyable social evening out as well!”
Transitioning from a full time working woman with a career to motherhood has its challenging moments and requires acclimating to a very different pace. Many moms now a days are choosing to put their careers on hold, or at least adjust their schedules to a more part time basis, in an effort to stay home with their babies. While it is an incredibly rewarding, intimate and unique experience to raise your baby, it also is a decision that requires patience and sacrifice.
“Stay at home Moms” are not the women that society once portrayed, or that reality TV continues to mock. They are strong, career driven women who continue to work, but in a very different medium, taking mulit-tasking and time management on a whole new level. Many Moms are hoping to raise a family while balancing their professional pursuits. How they do this requires a bit more creativity than many would expect.
“The transition from being a full-time healthcare provider for many years to mostly a stay-at-home Mom, still work per diem in healthcare, has naturally held some challenges,” explains Marybeth. “While I am loving being a new Mom and am committing to being as present as possible in that role, I have found myself craving something new, something different. I am fortunate to have a career in healthcare and find it very rewarding, but admittedly have sometimes felt that it is wearing yet another ‘caretaker’ hat these days.”
While Marybeth has immensely enjoyed the bond that she has formed with her now toddler, and the ability to continue her career, she was looking for an opportunity to have a creative outlet which also could provide her with flexibility and socialization separate from her professional and personal responsibilities.
“Stella and Dot Stylists are commonly Mothers, as it offers a great work/life balance and you choose how much you are able to put in at any given time in your career,” says Marybeth. “And like anything, what you put in, you get out. I like that flexibility.”
Being a Mother is one of the most rewarding jobs, and allows you to raise a baby, shape a child’s life and leave a lasting imprint on the world. You are thanked through mischivious grins, silly smiles, bear hugs and giggles you wish you could bottle up for those more trying days. However, being a Mother can also come with endless guilt, self doubt, commentary and critiques, tantrums and tears and long, sleepless, noisey nights.
It is important for Moms to take a step back in their busy lives to devote some time to themselves or to mingle with some other Mommy friends and bond over the beauty and battles that go with Motherhood. Putting your life on pause will enable you to return to the messier moments of Motherhood with more patience and perspective, which will be beneficial for both you and your little one.
