Raising a family in the heart of the city provides you with endless opportunities. Boston offers activities ranging from a growing park system, developmental classes for babies–art, music, sports and recreation–as well as alternatives to the “urban” setting, found in Boston’s Harbor Islands.
The Rose Kennedy Greenway

Relax in the heart of the city while enjoying the serenity of the Greenway.

continues to provide hours of entertainment, as babies enjoy the fountains and green space.  This newly developed park, running from China Town to the North End, provides a calming sense of “negative space” that allows families to enjoy the simplicity of a picnic lunch or engage in the organized activities that occur seasonally.  With the charming outdoor carousel located next to Faneuil Hall, adjacent to the recent addition of the pavilion constructed for The Boston Harbor Islands, the Greenway proves to be a wonderful solution to a warm day.  Keep your eyes open for new food vendors and upcoming events.

Rain or shine, your baby can enjoy the history, education and diversity that Boston offers.   Many of the museums in the city, such as the Children’s Museum, Science Museum (with the Omni Theatre and Planetarium), the New England Aquarium (with the IMAX Theatre and new shark and ray touch tank), offer discounted nights or “passes” which you can reserve at the Boston Public Libraryand many of their branches located around the city.In addition to the numerous indoor activities available, Boston has some of the most historic parks in the country.  Whether you are downtown enjoying the Boston Common’s Frog Pond, Public Gardens or Esplanade

The Esplanade offers miles of running and biking paths as well as free concerts and events throughout the year.

or in the North End taking advantage of the summer’s feasts, Mirabella Pool or many parks surrounding the community, Boston provides families with a special place to watch their little ones grow and explore.

There are always free movies, music and markets taking place throughout the city, providing cost effective activities for the entire family to enjoy!

In addition, below are some other opportunities to take advantage of in the city:

Guppies and Goldfish Infant and Toddler Swim Program
Sports Club LA/Boston

It’s never too early to learn the essentials of lifeguarding.

The instructor focuses on acclimating babies and toddlers to the water in a way that is both safe and engaging, by instructing parents on the best ways to hold, introduce and “play” with babies in the pool.  These classes incorporate songs, techniques and toys, while allowing families time to practice on their own.

Guppies is designed to introduce infants to the water and is recommended for babies 6-24 months and/or for those new to swimming.  This class will create a fun learning environment, educating families on how to balance the challenge and support needed to enhance early swim development.  The goal is to instill in babies (and parents) a sense of comfort, confidence and enjoyment in the water.  The instructor will offer structure, feedback and advice to further baby’s progress.

Goldfish is the next step for toddlers as they advance with their comfort and understanding of the water.  This class is recommended for children 24-36 months, or for toddlers who have had previous swim experience.  This class focuses on taking the foundation developed in Guppies to the next level now that the children are developmentally able to listen, model and work on swim techniques.  Through various drills, activities and games, your little swimmers will learn how to “look for fish, listen to fish, talk to fish,” developing the basis for rotary breathing, in addition to back floating, kicking and pulling drills, submerging and jumping in to the water.

Please check with your pediatrician to ensure that your child is ready for the water.  Swim diapers are required; no cameras are allowed in the pool area.

This class will incorporate music, dance and flexibility, enabling you and your baby to flow freely through active exercises before cooling down with stretching and breathing techniques.  The goal will be to both rejuvenate your body and center your mind, while your baby connects with music, movement and most importantly, mommy.
